Gostilna Čad d.o.o. 2017
RESTAURANT ČAD LJUBLJANA (POD ROŽNIKOM) SINCE 1889.
The cuisine is based on grilled dishes made using true charcoal, the distinctive mark of the
restaurant.
The old part of the restaurant is entered through a door with a chiseled inscription bearing the year 1850.
Within lies the soul of the restaurant where whole generations of guests have been sating their appetites.
Larger groups are served in the dining hall, which resides under the vaulted ceiling of an ancient stable and
may seat up to 120 guests. The open fireplace provides for a warm and cozy atmosphere. The pride of our
restaurant, though, is its shady summer garden known far and wide. This is where guests are pampered in the
deep shade of ancient chestnut trees. In the summer, the entire kitchen is moved into the garden so that
everyone may observe how the food is grilled. An adjoining playground will keep children entertained while
parents relax in the garden.

Family tradition under the Rožnik hill began in the year 1889 when the district was still called Lower Rožnik near
Ljubljana. This was when master baker Jožef Čad bought the house and its surrounding estate from the Selan
sisters. What started as a wine shop that also offered home produce and baked goods quickly developed into a
restaurant with an official hospitality concession. Prior to the Second World War, Restaurant Čad was already a
distinguished suburban establishment frequented by the townspeople of Ljubljana for its home-cooked
delicacies. The restaurant was famous for its pork and sausage, cappuccino and particularly for its excellent
home bread and pastry. It was also known as a place where numerous dinner parties and college festivities
were held as it was able to seat close to two hundred guests, quite a rare trait in those days. The restaurant
passed from Jožef onto his son Josip Čad who ran it successfully until his passing in 1935. The work was then
continued by his wife Agica Čad who steered the restaurant through the hardships of the Second World War.
After the war, son Josip Jr. was to take over the family business when tradition was interrupted by social change
that resulted in the nationalization of the restaurant in 1948. Under various managers, the restaurant had
stagnated until the year 1964 when Elempija Marković (Leka) introduced grill dishes to its offer. Business was
on the upside again and this prompted the focus on classic grill that was developed successfully from 1973 on
by the Vič Hospitality Company.
In 1996, denationalization brought the restaurant back into the hands of Josip Čad. The characteristic
restaurant offer has been preserved ever since, and business continues to prosper.
In old times, there was a habit of selling bread
separately from the food. It was offered by children
who carried it from table to table on special trays
around their neck.
On his way home the renowned Slovenian writer Ivan
Cankar often stopped by the restaurant. Every now
and then, he would doze off in merry company and the
master of the house would carry him back to the
Rožnik hill in a wicker basket.
Ljubljana's central park Tivoli is but a five minute walk
away from the restaurant, while a short stroll in the
opposite direction will take you right to the door of the
city Zoo.
The offer is not missing even desserts!
